Road seriously damaged after pipe-burst flood

A burst water main which flooded several streets in York has caused "significant damage" to the road surface, according to Yorkshire Water.

Salisbury Terrace remains closed while the 21in (53cm) diameter pipe and road surface are repaired following the incident on Sunday.

The Jubilee pub, which is currently being developed into flats, had its basement flooded and needed the water pumped out by North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service.

Developer Stuart Stagg said: "I heard a big bang and then I came out and it's like we were already flooded."

He expected initial repairs to cost seven to eight thousand pounds on top of any deeper repairs to the basement and building foundations, which he said Yorkshire Water would pay for.

"Everything happened so fast, it just started flooding in so quickly," he added.

"Within 10 minutes I had 15 kids up on the scaffolding.

The other flooded premises was the home of Valerie Turbot, who lives adjacent to where the road collapsed.

"I was sat in the back of the house watching TV and I walked through to the front door and I was paddling in water," she said.

"I'll need a new floor, wooden floor, because you can't open the door, the wood side's swollen, the floorboards, and I don't know what the joists would be like."

She had last had similar replacements done following the River Ouse flood in 1978, which affected 225 houses.

A spokesperson for Yorkshire Water said three properties had been affected and several vehicles in the area had been damaged.

They said staff from the company had been "speaking with anyone affected and will work with customers to understand any damage caused and how we can assist them".

A case manager had been assigned to help people with any claims or ongoing issues.

"Repairs to the main are under way and to allow this to be done safely, a road closure and signed diversion is in place," they added.

"Unfortunately, the burst caused significant damage to the road surface, which will take longer than usual to repair and reinstate.

"Our teams will be working as quickly as possible to carry out the reinstatement and will open the road as soon as it is safe to do so."

They said people could still access the road via Lincoln Street and temporary access to Balfour Street, which also flooded on Sunday night, had been set up via Swinerton Avenue.

North Yorkshire Police and North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service (NYFRS) crews also attended the scene at about 19:30 BST on Sunday.
