Warning over car park charity collector scam

A scam warning has been issued by police after a couple who tried to support a charity had "a significant amount" taken from their account.

A young woman approached a couple in a car park in Lutterworth on Sunday, Leicestershire Police said.

PCSO Steve Adams said she was "well dressed" but was only communicating using sign language and a clipboard. He added she was gathering donations using a card reader for a charity supporting women and children.

The couple tried to donate £5, which did not go through the first time, but after trying a second time, they later realised a much larger sum of money had been taken from their bank, the force added.

Adams, from the Lutterworth Beat Team, said: "Please be aware that this type of scam has happened and could be repeated.

"If you wish to kindly give to charity please use the official site or those that operate within a store.

"Be aware this type of person and scam can seem completely genuine. If in doubt, a polite no thank you should do - then please call us as soon as possible."
