A man in his 20s has been arrested after a woman was allegedly raped and punched.

Police say the woman reported being assaulted by a man in the North Street area of Wellington, Somerset, at about 02:20 BST on Friday 22 May, before he left in a car.

Officers said the man was arrested in Sussex on Friday night and remains in custody. A car has been seized as part of the investigation.

Avon and Somerset Police said the woman was treated in hospital and is now being supported by specialist officers.

Det Insp Wendy Fellowes thanked people who had shared CCTV of the suspected car – a white Volkswagen Golf.

She added: "Please do continue to review any footage you have of Waterloo Road, North Street, High Street, Fore Street or Taunton Road between 01:00 and 02:30 on Friday and contact us with any relevant information."
