Over 100 homes planned for former green belt site

More than 100 homes could be built on a former green belt site next to a sports club in Surrey.

Welbeck Land is seeking outline planning permission to build up to 104 homes on a site east of WR Sports Club on Woodthorpe Road, Ashford.

The proposal includes 72 flats and 32 houses, with 50% of the homes classed as affordable housing, as well as 107 parking spaces.

Planning documents describe the 1.15-hectare (2.84 acre) site as an area of "overgrown and relatively flat land".

The land was in the green belt but has been allocated for development under Spelthorne Borough Council's local plan, as reported by the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS).

The proposed flats would be contained within a four-storey apartment block, while the houses would range from two to three storeys in height.

The applicant said the site was in a "highly accessible location", within walking distance of Ashford railway station and local amenities.

Planning documents stated the scheme would provide "a mix of homes" aimed at creating "a diverse and inclusive community" that reflected local housing need.

WR Sports Club owns the site and, according to the application, supports its redevelopment.

The club did not respond to LDRS' request for comment.

A decision on the application will be made by Spelthorne Borough Council at a later date.
