Dry weather delays opening of new park

The opening of a new city centre park has been delayed because of dry weather.

Riverside Park in Sunderland sits on both sides of the River Wear and was expected to open on 21 July.

Signs have since gone up at the site to inform people that the opening has been postponed so more work can take place and new planting can "establish" itself.

Sunderland City Council, which has yet to announce a new opening date, said the delay was "a result of the extended dry spell".

The 47-acre park will include walking routes, exercise zones, play areas, community spaces and a skate park.

The council previously said it hoped the park would create new habitats for wildlife, reintroduce new species to the area and help people live active lifestyles.

The first phase of the redevelopment includes Southern Gateway, which sits between the Riverside multi-storey car park and the new Eye Hospital.

Kingsley Gardens, a community-managed garden space with individual and communal plots for growing fruit and vegetables, was also due to have opened.
