Vehicles on fire cause significant damage to A1

A fire on the A1 has caused significant damage to the dual carriageway, firefighters have said.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue said multiple crews were called to a fire involving two vehicles on the southbound carriageway north of Newark at about 13:20 BST on Monday and it had now been extinguished.

Crews said a van had crashed into a Tesla car prior to the fire. There are no reports of any injuries.

Traffic alerts from the AA said the road had been closed between B6325 Great North Road and the A17, but at 16:40 National Highways confirmed fire crews had left and two lanes had been opened past the scene.

Lane one remains closed while it is being assessed, said a highways spokesperson.

They added delays remained in the area and asked drivers to plan their journeys.
