Tributes have been paid to former Dundee lord provost Bob Duncan, who has died aged 79.

The Dundee-born former SNP councillor took up the role in May 2012 and held the position for five years before stepping down after suffering a minor stroke.

He was first elected as a Balgay councillor in 2003, then in Lochee after Balgay became part of the extended ward in 2007.

Current Dundee lord provost Bill Campbell described Duncan as an "approachable, kind man".

Speaking during a full meeting of the council, he said: "I found Bob to have great empathy and understanding, always willing to help those who asked for help.

"He was a source of great strength to me, and he also had a humorous side I enjoyed.

"I will always be the better for having known this approachable kind man, a wonderful lord provost, and I personally will miss him."

Cllr Stewart Hunter said Duncan had been a close family friend for more than 40 years.

He said: "(Bob and his wife Brenda) were good friends to my mum, really close to my children, and particularly my son, who almost saw Bob as a surrogate grandfather.

"He was the perfect person to be lord provost.

"His thoughts were always with other people first and foremost.

"It's a huge loss to Brenda and the family, it's a huge loss to me and my family, and it's a huge loss to the city as well."

Before becoming a councillor Duncan worked at local printing firm Valentine's and Mossman Memorials.
