Mural designed to reflect town's public gardens

Students have painted a mural which is inspired by a town's public gardens.

Falmouth University illustration students Vinny Lynch and Gemma Pasmore painted the mural in the pedestrian tunnel in Church Street in Falmouth with help from local school children and other volunteers.

A competition at Falmouth School and King Charles Primary School asked pupils to paint flora and fauna inspired by the town and elements of the winning entries were incorporated into the mural.

The project was funded by Falmouth BID and manager Keren Cooksey said public art could "make people smile, encourage them to stop and look at somewhere differently and create something that people feel belongs to their town".

The illustration students said the mural had been "a big learning curve"

The mural features colourful plants, birds, insects and mammals including a badger and stoat.

Lynch and Pasmore said it had been their first ever mural and it had been "a big learning curve, particularly understanding how to take an illustration and translate it onto such a large scale".

The design incorporated elements from pupils who had entered a school art competition

They said: "The response while we've been painting has been amazing, so many people have stopped to look, talk to us and tell us how much they like it, and the children in particular have loved spotting all the different creatures."

Falmouth School head teacher Joanne Guest said: "The finished mural is a wonderful legacy and a fantastic example of what can be achieved when schools, higher education and the local community work together."
