An election for a council ward has been cancelled after the death of one of the candidates.

Bury Council said elections in the Moorside ward would no longer go ahead on 7 May after Victor Hagan, who was due to stand for Reform UK, died. The poll will be rescheduled.

Council officer Lynne Ridsdale said: "We are shocked and saddened by the death of Mr Hagan, who has been a foster carer, alongside his wife, in the borough for many years, and extend our deepest sympathies to his family and loved ones."

In a tribute shared on Facebook, Bury Reform UK said Hagan had been an "active part of the community for many years, well loved by those upon whom his actions impacted".

"We are certain that his treasured role as a foster carer will leave a massive positive effect on all concerned," the group continued.

"We, as a party, will miss his love, consideration and genuine interest for the residents he stood to represent."

The group also said there will be no election-related posts shared by other party candidates for 24 hours "out of respect for Victor and all those affected".

Local Conservative candidate Jihyun Park also paid tribute to Hagan.

"It is rare in public life to meet someone who can look beyond differences and simply choose to support others with sincerity," Park said.

"I will always remember his encouragement, generosity, and the quiet strength he gave to those around him.

"Although we were from different backgrounds and stood in the same local political space, he was one of the first people to offer me genuine encouragement.

"My heartfelt condolences go to his family, friends, and loved ones."

A new date for the Moorside election has not yet been confirmed but it must be held within 35 days of the planned date of 7 May.

Residents will be notified with a letter informing them of the change, the council said, and new poll cards will be sent to all affected voters once the date has been set.

Once a new date is set, candidate nominations for Reform UK will reopen.

All other previous candidates remain nominated and will be included on the ballot paper.
