Wolves Women beat Plymouth Argyle to gain promotion to the second tier of women's football

Wolves Women are celebrating after being promoted to the Barclays Women's Super League 2, (WSL2).

The team beat Plymouth Argyle Women at the Pirelli Stadium, the home of League One club Burton Albion FC, to reach the second tier in women's football.

Charlotte Greengrass scored the only goal with Wolves' goalkeeper Alex Brooks named player of the match.

Praise for the team has poured in on social media, including from Wolves ambassador and television presenter Suzi Perry, along with supporters from other women's football teams and the FA Women's National League.

The team had sold 3,000 tickets in advance, and many more Wolves fans were at the Perelli on the day.

Manager Dan McNamara told the BBC it was an "incredible moment" and that he was overwhelmed to be able to share it "with such an incredible group".

Dan McNamara said it was an emotional moment to bring professional women's football to Wolverhampton

"It's unbelievable to bring professional [women's] football to Wolverhampton for the first time in its history," he said.

"I'm so proud of everyone who's played a part in the journey.

"All week, all season I've said we'd win the play-off... there was nobody who would beat us today."

Wolves rode their luck and McNamara admitted they were the poorer side for much of the match and relied on player-of-the-match Brooks to keep them in it.

"Brooksy has probably had a quiet season compared to what she had last year in WSL2, but I thought she was magnificent today," he said.

Wolverhampton Wanderers Women chairwoman Jenny Wilkes said watching the first half was particularly stressful and the team had done well to go in 0-0 at half-time.

McNamara and his staff are off to celebrate in Benidorm, and then the hard work starts in earnest for next season, with WSL rules meaning they will be full-time next year.
