'Undesirable' usage prompts city walkway closure
LDRS"Undesirable" behaviour has prompted plans to close a city centre route used by up to 2,000 people a day.
The walkway from Piccadilly Gardens to Portland Street in Manchester passes through the ground floor of the One Piccadilly office block.
Following repeated incidents of antisocial behaviour and "ongoing concerns about undesirable use of the space", a plan has been put forward to close it at either end so it can only be used by people entering the building.
Manchester City Council's planning committee approved the scheme, with a planning officer saying they "didn't think it would have a significant impact on movements relative to the area".
Two objectors claimed closing off the walkway would have a negative impact on food and drink businesses based on the building's ground floor.
A report to the committee said the "sheltered environment of the walkway provides opportunity for... forms of antisocial behaviour that are a continuing nuisance for occupiers".
