Fire crews tackle blaze at former private school

Fire crews have been tackling a blaze at a former private school in South Lanarkshire which closed amid a probe into allegations of "misconduct".

Six fire engines and specialist resources were sent to Fernhill School in Rutherglen at about 20:50.

The school closed in June, a day earlier than planned, with some staff going without their pay and liquidators removing items from the building.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said there had been no report of any casualties.

Nicole Digruber, who rang the fire service, said fireworks appeared to have been going off inside the building before the fire started.

The school, which opened in 1972, announced plans in February to shut at the end of the term.

The Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR) found accounts had not been submitted for several years.

Accountancy firm WBG was appointed as provisional liquidator.

It officially shut its doors a day early on 17 June, with an end of term "fun day" cancelled in order to "safeguard child welfare".
