John Fairbairn hopes to set up a Men's Shed in Malmesbury

A man has pledged not to give up on his mission to create a town's first Men's Shed.

John Fairbairn, 81, who lives in Malmesbury, Wiltshire, has spent almost four years searching for a suitable location for the community group, where men would develop their woodworking skills and friendships.

This is the second time someone has tried to find a site, as the first attempt, about seven years ago, was unsuccessful.

Fairbairn said a venue near the town's swimming pool was suggested by Wiltshire Council in 2025, but drainage issues could now halt these plans. Council bosses said they were working with Fairbairn to "explore potential options".

Fairbairn said: "I won't give up. I think it could make a big difference to people in Malmesbury.

"Typically, Men's Sheds are for men who are retired or who might have lost partners. Sometimes, the only other place men can go is the pub."

Fairbairn has already secured backing from MP Roz Savage and other businesses.

"My wife describes it as Women's Institute for men," said Fairbairn. "There's a lot of backing in the town. People I speak to think it's a fantastic idea."

Wiltshire Council said conversations are ongoing to secure a site for the Men's Shed.

Councillor Mel Jacob, cabinet member for communities, said: "The Men's Shed is a fantastic organisation that provides real value locally, and we remain committed to working together to move the project forward in a way that works for everyone."
