A shirt worn by Roger Hunt during England's historic 1966 World Cup campaign has sold for £11,000 at auction.

Theformer Liverpool striker wore the long-sleeved white shirt against France in a group game on 20 July 1966, when he scored both goals in a 2-0 win.

Hunt was part of the team that later lifted the World Cup when England beat West Germany 4-2 at Wembley Stadium.

Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge said: "As a lover of football, selling this is a great honour. As a Wiltshire company, Hunt had a strong connection to this town, it's a really cool thing."

The signed shirt was sold at auction at Henry Aldridge & Son in Wiltshire

Warrington-born Hunt spent most of his National Service time in the Devizes area and played for Devizes Town during his time in Wiltshire.

Hunt played in every game during the 1966 World Cup and scored three times to help England out of their group.

Aldridge said the high sales price probably had to do with the current World Cup taking place.

"Our boys didn't bring it home this time but we go again in four years time," Aldridge added.
