Junctions plan to target traffic 'pinch points'
Hull City CouncilHull City Council has outlined plans to tackle congestion at two traffic "pinch points".
The Roebank roundabout, on Kingswood, and the junctions at both ends of Calvert Lane are set to be improved to cope with an anticipated increase in traffic volumes in the future.
The authority has launched a six-week consultation on proposed changes.
Councillor Mark Ieronimo, cabinet portfolio holder for transport and infrastructure, said: "As Hull continues to grow, it is important that we plan ahead and invest in our road network to meet future demand, rather than simply waiting for problems to get worse."
The Roebank roundabout serves the Kingswood retail park, Asda superstore and homes on the estate.
The proposed improvements include widening the carriageway with additional lanes, installing traffic signals at the roundabout, providing signal-controlled pedestrian crossings and improving footpaths and cycle ways.
Proposals for the Calvert Lane area include widening the carriageway to provide additional traffic lanes on the southbound Calvert Road and northbound Calvert Lane.
Right-turn lanes on Anlaby Road and southbound Calvert Lane would be extended to help reduce queuing.
New signal-controlled crossings would also be installed as part of upgrades to footpaths and cycle ways.
Ieronimo said: "We know that congestion at busy junctions can be frustrating for residents and commuters, which is why we are looking at ways to improve traffic flow and make journeys more reliable.
"We are already making significant improvements to junctions in Kingswood and these proposals represent the next stage of our work to improve capacity across the city."
The council is seeking feedback separately on the Kingswood scheme and the Calvert Lane plans.
A consultation will run until 14 December.
