Shafiq Ahmed has been recognised for his community spirit

A Peterborough taxi driver who gave up a fare to help a stranded motorist fix a puncture has been given an award.

Shafiq Ahmed, who has been driving cabs for more than 30 years, spotted the stranded woman while he was on his way to a pick-up.

He stopped and contacted his office to transfer the booking to another driver so he could help change the woman's tyre.

Ahmed, who has been named the East of England winner of the Acorn Taxi Hero Award, said: "When I saw the woman with a punctured tyre, I knew I could lend a hand... I never expected anything in return."

He added: "For me, it's important to look out for people, whether they're in my taxi or not."

According to Ahmed's nomination, he is known for helping people who are distressed or short of money, helping to ensure they can make their trips.

"I'm very grateful for the nomination and proud to receive this recognition," said Ahmed.

"It's wonderful to see taxi drivers celebrated for the things they do beyond their everyday work."

The Acorn Insurance awards "celebrate the unsung heroes of Britain's taxi industry".

Ash Coakley, of Acorn Group, said: "Giving up a fare to assist a stranded motorist, while making sure his passenger was collected on time, shows real consideration for everyone involved.

"His willingness to help passengers who are struggling financially speaks to that same generosity."

The national winner will be announced on 11 November.
