Prison operations disrupted after staff action

Prison activities and visits have been cancelled or postponed after it was announced that officers are to work to rule for a week.

The week, which started on Monday, is seeing staff at Guernsey Prison work their contracted hours only with no additional activity carried out.

Bosses confirmed that discussions with a union and its members would continue this week to address concerns where possible.

Dave Le Ray, director of operations for Justice and Regulation, said plans were in place to ensure safe delivery of prison services.

He added some changes were required to the weekday regime as a result, which would align to that ordinarily in place at weekends.

He said: "Some activities for prisoners have been moved or cancelled, and visitation has been moved to the afternoon at 15:00.

"Prisoners will also be confined to their cells at an earlier time on weekdays this week, equivalent to that which is standard practice for weekends.

"These are unavoidable but necessary temporary changes for the next week."
