Police were called after swimmers got into difficulty in the sea

A man and two children have been airlifted to hospital after getting into difficulty in the sea at Margate.

Emergency services, including lifeboat crews, were called at about 16:45 BST on Saturday following reports that a number of swimmers had been overwhelmed by conditions.

Kent Police said officers went to the scene, where the three were already receiving medical treatment, to manage traffic in the area and allow an air ambulance and coastguard helicopter to land.

All three casualties were airlifted to hospital for further treatment.
