A new mural has been unveiled in Ossett town centre celebrating the town's "distinctive heritage".

Commissioned by Wakefield Council and created by West Yorkshire artist Shiraaz Ali, the artwork has been installed on the side of Richmond's Butchers in Market Place.

Named Welcome to Ossett, the mural replicates the shape of the windows found in the town hall and features many landmarks including the war memorial.

Ali said it "honours the history, festivities and patriotism of the town whilst celebrating its bright future".

He added: "My role as the artist was to take inspiration from the people of Ossett to create a warm welcome into the town, make people feel proud of their home and bring smiles to daily life."

More than 400 residents were consulted on the design after a previous version was dismissed for being too "garish".

The mural is part of the Crossings and Gateways programme, a public art initiative across the Wakefield district, supported by funding from Arts Council England and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

Richmond Butchers was established in 1945 and is located opposite the town hall.

The owner said he was "delighted" his business would "help tell the story of our community and bring colour and pride to the local area".

Councillor Lukasz Borcz, executive member for culture and sport, said it would "be appreciated for years to come".

He added: "This mural celebrates Ossett's distinctive heritage.

"From its colourful markets and stained-glass windows found in the town hall to local wildlife like the peregrine falcon that visits Trinity Church's spire."
