Plan for padel courts at college given go-ahead

Charnwood Borough Council has approved a planning application from the David Ross Education Trust to construct six padel courts at Charnwood College.
According to planning documents, the proposals would provide a "high-quality, all-weather facility" to support the college, and would be hired out during weeknights and weekends.
A report by planning officers said the proposed site would create opportunities for "healthier lifestyles" for young people and the wider community.
Padel, which has swelled in popularity in recent times, is similar to tennis but is distinguished by shorter rackets, smaller courts and underarm serves.
In May, the Lawn Tennis Association estimated there were more than 1,500 padel courts in Britain.
Plans add that the proposed courts would have floodlights and would be available for use until 21:30 on weekdays and Saturdays with an earlier closing time on Sundays.
