Fire crews were called to the home in West Mersea, Essex on Saturday

People with log burners have been warned to ensure embers are properly disposed of following a fire at a house.

The blaze in West Mersea on Saturday was started by embers placed in a wooden container, Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said.

Crews were called to the home after neighbours saw smoke, which had filled the property by the time the flames had been extinguished.

Watch manager Dave Farrant said: "When you put out your log burner, make sure embers are completely cool and put them in a fireproof container."

"We'd like to praise neighbours for calling 999 as the occupants were out when the fire started," he added.
