Man jailed after gun found in park

A man has been jailed for six years after a gun with his DNA on it was discovered in a park.

The handgun was found in a canvas bag in a wooded area of East Carlton Park in Corby just before 12:00 GMT on 17 November 2025 by an off-duty PCSO who was walking his dog.

Forensic tests found DNA from Jakub Sawa, 27, on the left-hand side of the grip. He was charged with possession of a firearm.

Sawa was found guilty at Northampton Crown Court on 14 August and was sentenced on 15 September.

Det Con Kieran Fowler said: "This was a significant discovery by an off-duty colleague, and I would like to commend his vigilance in reporting what he found.

"The firearm recovered from East Carlton Park was a viable handgun, and thanks to extensive forensic enquiries, we were able to link it directly to Sawa through DNA evidence.

"Illegal firearms have no place in our communities. They have the potential to cause devastating harm, and we are committed to pursuing anyone involved in possessing, using or supplying these weapons."
