Training grants of £750 offered to Ukrainian refugees

Ukrainian refugees in a Surrey town will receive up to £750 to help pay for training and courses in a bid to help them find work.

Epsom & Ewell Borough Council said it would provide grants to current and former beneficiaries of the Homes for Ukraine scheme, which can be used to fund vocational training, courses and exams.

The grants aim to help people improve their skills and "open doors to enjoyable and fulfilling employment", a council spokesperson said.

Clive Woodbridge, of the council's community and wellbeing community, said: "This bursary is a practical investment in people's futures."

Woodbridge added: "We remain committed to supporting those who have been forced to leave their homes because of the war in Ukraine.

"I am continually inspired by the courage and resilience shown by Ukrainian families living in the borough."

More than 250 people have been housed in Epsom and Ewell under the Houses for Ukraine scheme since the outbreak of war in 2022, a council spokesperson said.

Applications for the scheme can be made on the council's website.

A similar scheme aimed at Ukrainian children and young people funding activities outside of school was also announced, giving £350 to encourage participation in local activities.

Epsom & Ewell Borough Council said that it also provided Ukrainian language courses to young children who fled under the scheme and ran social trips to sites like the Tower of London and Littlehampton Beach.
