The Post Office branch is due to close in autumn

People in a Surrey town are "really worried" their local post office is closing, according to an MP.

Horley's central post office is due to shut on Saturday after the Morrison's supermarket it was based in announced its closure.

"It's going to have a significant impact on the town," said MP Chris Coghlan. "It's just one more thing that's closing."

The Post Office had tried to find a replacement retailer to host it, though it said those who expressed interest did not have "suitable premises".

"We fully recognise the inconvenience this will cause our customers and small businesses," a spokesperson for the Post Office said.

"We want to open a replacement branch as soon as possible."

'Crucial service'

Coghlan, a Liberal Democrat, called on any retailers interested in hosting a post office in the centre of Horley to come forward.

"It's something we really need in the town," he told BBC Radio Surrey.

"It's important that people and local businesses have a central, accessible location for this crucial service."

A Post Office spokesperson said there had been "more interest" from retailers, which would soon be looked into closely.

The nearest alternative Post Office is a 20-minute walk away.
