Glider damaged after items set on fire in back of vehicle

A Translink glider has been damaged after a number of items on the vehicle were set on fire on Thursday.

The glider was on Twinbrook Road in west Belfast at around 17:40 BST when a "young man set fire to a number of items at the back of the bus", police said.

Nobody was injured during the blaze, but the driver, who extinguished the fire, has been left "shaken".

Police said damage was "caused to the flooring", and there was "smoke damage noted throughout".

As a result, the bus has been taken out of service.

A police spokesperson said: "The fire quickly took hold and was only prevented from spreading further down the bus due to the actions of the driver who was alerted to the fire and was able to extinguish the blaze.

"The young man alighted from the bus in the Twinbrook Road area.

"Our enquiries are ongoing and we are keen to hear from anyone who was on the bus at the time, or who may have witnessed anything suspicious in the area."

A spokesperson for Translink said they are assisting the police with their investigation.

They added: "The safety of our customers and staff is always our top priority and we utterly condemn all instances of anti-social behaviour which is completely unacceptable.

"We encourage anyone with information relating to this incident to contact the PSNI."
