Homes and school hopes for former RAF airfield
Google/LDRSA former airfield and racetrack in Derbyshire has been identified as a potential location for a new village of thousands of homes and a new school.
The former RAF base Darley Moor Airfield, which borders Edlaston, Wyaston and Hales Green, and sits off the A515 south of Ashbourne, is for sale.
Derbyshire Dales District Council has now said the airfield and associated racetrack site is its broad location for a new settlement of between 2,000 and 4,000 homes, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
The village is expected to provide 1,050 homes by 2042, the end of the council's pending Local Plan.
The 180-acre racetrack site, currently home to the Darley Moor Sports Centre, is being marketed for sale by Savills for an undisclosed fee, with the listing mentioning "long-term development potential" through the council's Local Plan.
It states the RAF had used the location during World War Two up until 1954, with the plot becoming a racetrack in 1965.
Meanwhile, a 35-acre airfield and associated farm, hangar, flying centre, cafe and shop have been sold through Bagshaws, pending negotiations, after touting offers between £1.5m and £2m.
The council said the "boundary, nature and form" of the new community would be drawn up "through a site-wide masterplan".
The authority added the new village must have at least 1,500 houses, providing 1,050 by 2042, and have space for expansion for a further 2,500 homes.
This would include a secondary school, health facilities, a local centre for shops and other services "of a suitable scale to meet residents day to day needs", and business space, along with expanded bus services to Ashbourne.
The Local Plan will be put out to public consultation in August, the LDRS said.
