People across Plymouth are being asked to donate teddy bears to help comfort children entering care through a new city-wide appeal.

Foster for Plymouth hopes to collect at least 550 brand-new teddy bears and soft toys by the end of November, enough for every child and young person currently looked after by the city council to receive one.

The bears will be collected and stored before being displayed in a special Bear Adoption Room, where children can choose a teddy. Donors are also being asked to give each bear a name.

Children can often arrive in care unexpectedly and with very few belongings, according to Foster for Plymouth, which said a teddy could provide comfort and reassurance.

Councillor Jemima Laing, cabinet member for children and young people, said: "For many of us, a teddy bear was one of our first friends. It was something we cuddled when we were upset, took on adventures and kept close when we needed comfort.

"For children entering care, life can suddenly feel unfamiliar and uncertain. A teddy bear can't solve everything, but it can provide comfort at a time when it's needed most."

She urged Plymouth residents to support the appeal, adding: "We're asking the people of Plymouth to come together and show our children and young people that they are valued, cared for and not alone."

Only new soft toys can be donated. Contributions can be dropped off at Plymouth libraries and Children's Services Reception at Ballard House, or posted to Foster for Plymouth's Teddy Bear Appeal.

The campaign is also encouraging schools, businesses and community groups to organise collections before the November deadline.
