A teenager has been found with life-threatening injuries after a stabbing in Birmingham, with police saying it was understood a fight began between two groups.

Officers were called to Victoria Square in the city centre at about 20:30 BST on Tuesday, after the 18-year-old man was discovered injured.

He was taken to hospital and remains in a stable condition.

West Midlands Police said a cordon remained in place on Wednesday while officers forensically examined the area.

Onlookers saw an air ambulance during the incident, however a spokesperson for West Midlands Ambulance Service has since confirmed that the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance were called but were stood down before landing.

The police said it was also reviewing CCTV footage and speaking to witnesses.

Det Supt Lucy Kirwan said: "We know this will cause concern to those living, working and visiting the city centre, and we will have an increased presence in the area to offer reassurance."

She said the incident had happened "at a busy time last night" and the force knew there were "a lot of people in the area".

Kirwan asked anyone with mobile phone footage of what happened or who could provide information to contact police.
