Creative and fun names for 11 recycling lorries about to enter service are being sought.

Torridge District Council has launched a competition as part of its ongoing campaign to raise awareness and interest about recycling in an attempt to help lower the Devon area's carbon footprint.

The council it wanted the names to be innovative, imaginative and have an "all-important humorous element" with examples from a previous contest for its rubbish lorries including Grim Sweeper, Trash Gordon and Bindiana Jones.

Entries are open until 28 June with the winning names, chosen by waste and recycling service workers, being unveiled in July.

Councillor Chris Leather, lead member for operational services, said the council wanted the competition to be a "fun and creative way" to introduce the new fleet which would be play a "vital role" in the community.

The independent councillor added he had been left impressed by the entries which came in from the previous competition for the authority's bin lorries.

"There's some really concocted names that come in, but they are good," Leather said.

"When you see them on the front of the vehicles, those who have chosen them must feel quite proud that they've got a vehicle travelling round the district that they've actually given a name to."
