Mystery device found on beach 'not ordnance'

The discovery of a mysterious object that sparked the evacuation of an East Yorkshire beach was not an explosive device, HM Coastguard has confirmed.

The organisation said it was made aware of "suspected ordnance" on Bridlington South Beach at about 14:10 BST on Sunday.

A spokesperson said a military bomb disposal team was sent to the area, but confirmed the object was not ordnance and removed it from the beach.

It comes after a device thought to be a Japanese grenade dating from World War Two was found on the town's North Beach on Saturday.

Some residents in the Foresters Way area of the town were evacuated while a cordon was put in place following Saturday's discovery.

The device was detonated by an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team later that day.
