New drone shots reveal the complete destruction of the garage and some cars

New images have revealed the full aftermath of a huge fire that destroyed an MOT centre and forced the evacuation of a large supermarket in South Lanarkshire.

Drone footage shows burnt out cars inside the garage in Uddingston which was completely destroyed as the blaze tore through the building on Monday evening.

Witnesses spoke of flames leaping 60ft (18m) into the air but firefighters worked through the night to stop it spreading to an adjacent petrol station and the nearby Tesco superstore.

One person was treated at the scene for the effects of breathing in smoke. Police said there were no other casualties and the fire is not believed to have been started deliberately.

Six fire engines and a high reach platform were called to the blaze at about 18:00 on Monday with a huge column of smoke visible for miles.

Firefighters finally extinguished the fire and left the scene at about 09:30 the following morning.

The supermarket and a section of the town's Bothwell Road were closed during the operation, but they have now reopened.

The fire in Uddingston is next to a petrol station and a branch of Tesco.

The fire broke out in a business that specialises in vehicle servicing and MOTs.

The garage was completely destroyed with the roof collapsing.

Friends of a mechanic and MOT tester who worked at the garage have launched a crowdfunding appeal after his entire collection of expensive tools was destroyed.

The appeal said the father-of-three had lost not only his job, but five toolboxes full of equipment which he had collected over 20 years.

Police Scotland said in a statement: "One man was treated at the scene. There were no other reports of injuries.

"The fire is not being treated as wilful."
