The planned facility would house Wiltshire Council's bin lorry fleet

Residents are being asked for their views on a proposed £30m council facility including a recycling centre and bin lorry depot.

Wiltshire Council hopes to start work on the site in Bowerhill, on the edge of Melksham, in 2027. It was formerly a sports centre and golf course.

The site would encompass Melksham's existing household recycling centre (HRC), which would be "improved". The council's bin lorries would also be housed there along with highways equipment.

Ian Thorn, leader of Wiltshire Council, said: "We are keen to hear from residents about the plans for the HRC in particular as well as any concerns they may have or any local issues they feel we should be aware of."

In November 2023, Wiltshire Council approved a capital budget of £32.6m for a new depot in Melksham.

Bowerhill was chosen "as the most suitable site due to its central location, good access to the road network and proximity to key residential areas that will use the HRC".

The land was already owned by the council. It was previously home to the Christie Miller Sports Centre, which closed in 2018 due to the cost of repairs.

The site would include offices for staff

Council officers have confirmed the site could include a "re-use shop" selling items donated to the recycling centre that are still in a good condition.

The site could also have offices and parking for staff, as well as electric vehicle charging.

Thorn said: "Designing a site that accommodates all these functions has been complex, with factors such as land covenants influencing the layout."

He said the council hopes to submit a planning application later this summer.

The council's proposals are on display at Melksham Community Campus, Market Place, until 31 July.

Council officers will be available to answer questions on Tuesday 21 July, from 10:00 to 16:00 BST and also on Thursday 23 July, from 14:00 to 19:00.

The council's website states it "cannot confirm when the new depot will open".

Melksham Without Parish Council is to discuss the plans with Wiltshire Council officials.
