I'm Britain's youngest racehorse trainer at 21

There was never really any doubt about what Lauren Frost's working life would be spent doing.

At primary school she would tell teachers when she grew up she wanted to be a racehorse trainer.

Now the 21-year-old, from Newark in Nottinghamshire, has become Britain's youngest licensed racehorse trainer and holds a joint licence with dad Kevin.

"It's difficult but it's so rewarding," she said. "It's something that has always been my life and I love the horses to bits. I couldn't think of a better job to do."

To qualify, Lauren competed in a series of industry courses and demonstrated five years of experience, starting as soon as she turned 16.

Kevin, who has been a trainer for over a decade, said he could give that experience - but he didn't make it easy.

"I've made her work for it, and she's come through the other end, and still wants to do it, which is fantastic," he said.

Mum Amanda tried to suggest other jobs Lauren could do.

"I thought 'I don't want her to think she has to do this', but yeah, she's pestered and pestered.

"She's had horrible ponies, she's done eventing, she's done Pony Club, and it was inevitable she was going to do it.

"That's what you want for your children, isn't it? To do something they love.

"I tried everything I could to stop her. I wouldn't let her have a riding lesson until she was 10."

Lauren is determined to make a go of it and take advantage of being a full three years younger than anyone else with a trainer's licence.

"I would love to be able to expand our pool of owners and our pool of horses, to be able to show up at the big meetings and have a fighting chance," she added.

Kevin, 64, said: "It's everything that me and Amanda have worked hard for all our lives."

Lauren said that she felt like she had been taught by one of the best in her dad and that training a winner would always feel special

"Being able to see it all pay off and seeing that your owner is happy and your horse is happy, that's all that matters."
