A man has pleaded guilty to the murder of a mum-of-four who died after being stabbed in the back following a fight.

Charlene Dowsell, 41, died on 18 July after an altercation outside a property in St Vincent Road, near Newport city centre.

Gwent Police said officers, including those with firearms, were called at 01:37 BST and told "a male and female were fighting and the female was bleeding".

Dowsell was found a short distance away near Chepstow Road, and "despite first aid" was pronounced dead at 03:15. She was later identified by her father.

Albert Williams, 66, of Ruperra Street, Newport, appeared at Cardiff Crown Court on Monday and will be sentenced on 21 December.

Dowsell's family, who were in court, broke down in tears in the public gallery as the plea was entered.

She was previously described as the "foundation" of the family, who said in a tribute that it was "heartbreaking" her four children had been left without a mum.

"You're at peace now our beautiful girl. Gone but never forgotten," it said.

A post-mortem examination gave a provisional cause of death as a stab wound to Dowsell's left back involving the lung, stomach and liver.
