Warrant for man who sent MP 'death threats'
BBCA warrant has been issued for a man who failed to attend his court sentencing after being convicted of sending an MP messages which she described as "death threats".
Anwar Mohammed, 59, of Anchor Street, Lowestoft, Suffolk, was found guilty last month following a trial of one count of sending communication of an indecent/offensive nature to Lowestoft MP Jess Asato in 2024.
He was due to be sentenced at Ipswich Crown Court at 12:00 BST, but failed to attend and Judge David Wilson issued a warrant for his arrest.
After his conviction, Asato previously said the verdict "underlines the importance of respect in public life and decency in political discussions".
Asato said the emails had been directed at her and her children.
"Being able to disagree without resorting to abuse, threats, or intimidation is the cornerstone of a healthy and functioning democracy – one that has become increasingly eroded in recent years," she said.
"People who want to serve their communities and stand for elected office should be able to do so without having their safety put at risk."
