City market shortlisted for architecture award

Bradford's Darley Street Market has been shortlisted for a prestigious architecture award, as it marks the first anniversary of its opening.

The Bradford Council-run market has been nominated alongside six other projects in the Leisure category of the Architects' Journal Awards 2026.

The three-storey market, which cost £31m, is made up of a fresh food floor, a non-food floor and Darley Street Kitchen – a floor featuring street food vendors that regularly hosts live music and events.

Greig & Stephenson Architects, which designed the facility, said the nomination was "fantastic recognition for the project and everyone involved".

"At the heart of Bradford's city centre regeneration, Darley Street Market brings together food, trade, events and community under one roof, creating a vibrant and inclusive new civic destination," a spokesperson said.

Earlier this year Darley Street Market was named Best Food Market in the country by the National Association of British Markets.

The scheme was a central pillar of the former Labour administration's city centre regeneration programme and opened last year after numerous delays and overspends.

Competition in the Architects' Journal Awards includes Tarlair Outdoor Pool Pavilion in McDuff, Fulham Pier and Eden Mill Distillery and Visitor Centre in Guardbridge, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

The award ceremony will take place on 26 November.
