Council joining women's rough sleeping census

A local authority is taking part in the national Women's Rough Sleeping Census for the first time this year.

The voluntary census takes place over the week of 21-27 September and is being led by two charities — Solace Women's Aid and the Single Homeless Project.

Reform UK-run West Northamptonshire Council said it would work with statutory and voluntary organisations that support women who are sleeping outdoors.

"Many women take steps to remain hidden, because sleeping visibly on the streets can place them at increased risk of violence, exploitation and abuse," said Charlie Hastie, deputy council leader and cabinet member for housing.

"By taking part in the Women's Rough Sleeping Census for the first time, we can gain a much clearer picture of women's experiences in West Northamptonshire and identify where support services need to be strengthened."

One hundred local authorities took part in last year's census.

The authority estimated that between 40 and 50 women in its area were currently experiencing rough sleeping and street vulnerability, which includes those involved in street-based sex work.

During the census week, women would be invited to complete a short voluntary survey about their experiences. Drop-in sessions and support opportunities would also be available.

Those taking part would receive a £10 voucher and a small self-care package as a thank you.

Gemma Kay, women at risk recovery worker at addiction charity Inspire Northants, said: "The census is extremely important to our service, as there are a number of females sleeping rough who remain uncounted.

"This will enable us to target areas where these women are known to be sleeping and ensure they are accessing the full range of support available from different services."
