Lorry and cyclist in crash at busy junction

A lorry and cyclist have been involved in a serious crash in Worcestershire.

West Mercia Police said it was called to the junction of New Road and the A38 in Bromsgrove, with West Midlands Ambulance Service sending an ambulance at 15:34 BST. No details have been released of casualties.

The A38 was blocked in both directions between the A448 and Charford Road on Tuesday evening. New Road was also closed both ways between Wellington Road and Bant Mill Road, according to traffic information service Inrix.

BBC journalist Joanne Malin, who lives in Bromsgrove, came across the crash at about 16:00: "It was obvious there had been a serious collision."

She added: "There were half a dozen police vehicles and an ambulance at the junction of the main A38 and New Road, which links Aston Fields with Bromsgrove town centre."

Malin said she saw officers closing New Road and turning away pedestrians and motorists.

"A police officer was putting out signs to close New Road towards the junction," she said.

"He told me I couldn't approach the scene and was turning away pedestrians and other motorists."

The collision appeared to have happened in the Bromsgrove Route Enhancement Programme roadworks on the northbound side of the A38.

"The A38 through Bromsgrove has been undergoing roadworks for several years and the accident has happened within the roadworks area on the northbound carriageway," she said.

"I could see a large industrial tipper lorry and a black car within the police cordon."

The crash also caused disruption on surrounding roads.

"The roads were already busy as the town's two high schools were turning out and parents and other motorists were left trying to find alternative routes around this major junction," Malin added.

"Almost immediately there were traffic jams as people tried to divert."
