Vacant leisure centre to reopen as adventure hub
North Yorkshire CouncilA vacant leisure facility is to reopen as an indoor adventure centre with giant children's play area, climbing wall, ten-pin bowling lanes and padel courts.
The centre next to Selby Leisure and Wellbeing Hub closed during the Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020 and is due to reopen as the Summit Indoor Adventure Centre later this summer.
North Yorkshire Council, which inherited the building from the former Selby Council in March 2023, said "significant work" had taken place to secure a new tenant.
Mark Crane, North Yorkshire Council's executive member for open to business, welcomed the news.
He said: "By encouraging investment and regeneration, we can hopefully attract more people into our town centres who are likely to spend money in other shops and venues, while also providing local employment opportunities."
North Yorkshire CouncilThe premises opened in May 2016 but closed in March 2020 before being used as a Covid vaccination site.
A lease has now been agreed with Curly Pepper Trading Ltd, which operates seven other indoor adventure parks across the UK.
The company said it was looking to renovate the venue in time for the school summer holidays.
Vogue Padel will also open two indoor padel courts at the site.
Curly Pepper Trading Ltd director Liam Caffrey said the centre would bring a new lease of life to the local community.
"The return of the bowling lanes, climbing walls and soft play is just the start, and we're equally excited to introduce Vogue Padel as part of the next phase of the development," he said.
