Motorists driving in three particular bus lanes in Northamptonshire will face financial penalties from next month.

Cameras are in place at Harlestone Road and Duston Road in Northampton, and Lodge Road in Daventry.

From Monday, anyone caught driving in the bus lanes will be sent a warning letter, but full enforcement will start from 6 July with penalty charge notices to be issued.

The West Northamptonshire Council website says the penalty for driving in a bus lane is £70, reduced to £35 if paid within 21 days.

The Reform UK-controlled authority said the lanes were reserved for buses and must not be used by other vehicles unless clearly stated on local signage.

Richard Butler, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: "These bus lanes are there for a reason.

"They help keep buses running on time and make sure people can rely on public transport.

"When other vehicles use them unlawfully, it causes delays and can create safety risks for everyone using the road."
