Massive wildfire hits fields near sports ground

A wildfire as large as 14 football pitches has hit fields near a university, firefighters said.

County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service said it received calls about the blaze near Durham University's Graham Sports Centre at about 14:45 BST.

It said it had sent four fire appliances to tackle the blaze and it had been put out in an about an hour.

A spokesperson said at the fire's height, the service had received more than 60 calls from the public.
