Police are hoping to speak to several potential witnesses who were nearby when Shanice Brookes was fatally shot in Sheffield.

The 30-year-old bystander was killed in the early hours of 25 May outside One Four One in the city centre following an altercation not involving her in the street.

South Yorkshire Police said the gun used in the shooting is yet to be found, with investigations continuing.

Det Insp Matt Bolger, Senior Investigating Officer, said: "These people are not suspects, they are witnesses - witnesses who may hold information that could help us deliver justice for a young mother and her family."

Ms Brookes, the mother of a 10-year-old boy, had worked as a volunteer for the Sheffield community charity Zest and was about to finish a degree at Sheffield College.

The officer added: "While Shanice has loving family and friends who are rallying around her little boy, he will now grow up without the love, warmth and guidance of his mum.

"If you know something, however small, please do the right thing and come forward."

Jemele Rhone is set to go on trial next year charged with the murder of Ms Brookes, with co-defendant Deiryen Dyce accused of charges including assisting an offender and drug possession.

Discussing the search for the gun involved, Bolger said: "If you have been forced to hold this weapon, or you are in fear, you can contact us in confidence, we will listen and we will protect you.

"However, let me be absolutely clear - if we find you hiding this gun, you will face the full force of the law and you will regret choosing to protect a weapon that has killed a young mother."
