Construction has started on a cadet "super centre" that will bring together seven Army and RAF detachments in one building.

The project on Clare Street in Northampton is expected to cost about £2.1m and will provide modern facilities for hundreds of cadets and adult volunteers when it opens later this year.

The project supports the government's ambition to increase cadet force numbers by 30% before 2030, as outlined in its Strategic Defence Review.

Stuart Williams, chief executive of East Midlands Reserve Forces and Cadets Association, said: "Bringing together seven detachments under the roof of one super centre is unprecedented in our region."

"It will deliver modern and fit-for-purpose facilities and help to transform the cadet experience for children and young people in and around Northampton," he added.

Col Alex Calver, commandant of the Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland Army Cadet Force, described the new site as "a flagship facility for the East Midlands and a hive of inspiration for cadet forces".

Plans include two drill halls, office and storage areas and a covered outdoor training space, which could also be used for air rifle shooting.

Solar panels and other sustainability measures will also be installed to reduce energy use.
