Certificates needed for EU travel with pets
Getty ImagesPeople travelling with pets to destinations within the European Union (EU) will need a certificate for their animals under new rules.
The States of Guernsey said all EU pet passports expired on 22 April and new national legislation meant pet owners must apply for an animal health certificate.
States Veterinary Officer David Chamberlain said pet owners whose primary residence is Guernsey will need the certificate from their vet before each trip.
The changes apply to all non-commercial movements of dogs, cats and ferrets.
Chamberlain said Guernsey pet owners whose animals were acquired in the EU may still use EU pet passports to travel to and from the island.
"If your main residence is in the EU, you may use or continue to use a pet passport issued by an EU member state to travel between the EU and Guernsey," he said.
