Popular free walks festival returns for 20th year

Guildford's annual Walkfest will return in September for its 20th year, offering a programme of free guided walks across the borough.

The month-long festival features at least one walk every day and is organised by local groups including the Surrey Hills Society, Guildford Ramblers, Guildford Health Walks and Guildford Town Guides.

Walks range from town tours to countryside routes, with some led by specialists covering topics such as local history and the Wey & Arun Canal.

Chris Howard, chairperson of the Walkfest committee, said the event gave people the chance to discover places "right on their doorstep".

"We live in such a beautiful area and yet many people who come on our walks are amazed at what special places they discover," he adds.

Walkfest also aims to get new people, who have perhaps had some health issues, or never walked before, to get back out exercising again.

The festival starts on Tuesday.
