Ma France - Tips 14 & 15 - Cooking and Chemist's

Bonjour !

After those strenuous walks, you’ll be ready to talk about food again, this time, ingredients, recipes and cooking instructions, with chefs from les bouchons, the small traditional restaurants in Lyons. And if on your walks you found mushrooms, then in France, you’ll see that you can take them to la pharmacie, the chemist’s, where the pharmacist is trained to identify the poisonous ones.

  • Tip 14 :

Unit 14 Look in your store cupboard and fridge. Can you name some of the foods and seasonings? Then practise using the expression il faut with some ingredients and some verbs to say what to do: il faut des oignons, du sel, du poivre, du boeuf, du vin etc. You need onions, salt, pepper, beef, wine. Il faut laisser mijoter pendant 2 heures. You need to let it simmer for 2 hours. Before you know it, you'll be cooking in French!

  • Tip 15 :

Unit 15 Be prepared. If you or someone in your family has a particular condition that could mean a visit to the chemist's or doctor whilst you are away, it's a good idea to prepare a phrase of explanation before you go. For example, if you are diabetic you can explain, je suis diabétique. If your son is allergic to nuts, you say, mon fils est allergique aux noix. It would also be helpful to show a list of any medicines you take.
