FaithYou are in: Tees > Faith > Everyone loves a conspiracy ![]() Everyone loves a conspiracyBy Mark Turnbull A conversation with the novelist GP Taylor on BBC Radio Cleveland's Sunday Breakfast Show inspires Mark Turnbull to try and crack the appeal of the Da Vinci Code ... Everyone loves a conspiracy, there is nothing more exciting than thinking things aren't as they seem. I think that's what's gripping people with Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code; first there was the book, now, the best-seller has been turned into a film. Dan Brown has managed to do what no other has - he has turned a boring subject of Gnostic gospels, codices and numerology into something that everyone can easily understand and crack the plot for themselves. In total, a brilliant work of fiction. What we have to understand is that The Da Vinci Code is just that, a work of fiction. Unfortunately, just like as happened with Jerry Springer the Opera, many people of faith are hyper-ventilating in the extreme over the supposed potential damage Dan Brown's work of fiction will do to their faith. I would like to suggest that our faith is far stronger than any blasphemy or work of fiction. The church has had more severe accusations leveled against her before and come through them. ![]() Tom Hanks and Audrey Tautou The only trouble is, that those who don’t understand faith do think some of what Brown has written is true. I could spend pages de-coding the Da Vinci code and pointing out the very sparce facts from the shovel-loads of fiction in it. But all I think I'll say is; It is based on a lie, and, it is our duty as people of faith to tell that message to the world.
