FaithYou are in: Tees > Faith > A Pilgrim's Progress ![]() Lent is a time for giving up luxuries A Pilgrim's ProgressBy Mark Turnbull BBC Radio Cleveland's Sunday Breakfast Show presenter, Mark Turnbull, asks how your Lent is going? I hesitate to ask, but how's your Lent been? Or, if you've ever set out to observe Ramadan; did you manage - if you are honest? For the Christian Lent is that 40 days before Easter which has been compared to a trudge through the desert and, what makes it worse is Sundays are not included. For the Muslim Ramadan could be seen to be an even harsher desert, because, as an outsider looking in, the tests are more severe. My musings on this subject were aroused as I took stock of my own Lent. 2006 won't go down as the most rewarding as far as my spiritual journey is concerned, I think it’s a problem in the will-power department? I guess the phrase "God loves a trier" was invented for me. However, I got to thinking about the things which are available to aid us pilgrims as we progress. I learned this week that Tony Blair reads a chapter a day from the bible, and a portion of the Koran. A great way to ensure we remain in touch with the maker. Then there's our local church or faith community; it is broadly agreed that there is a greater hungering after matters spiritual, and where better to find the answer? Or, at least to get help with some of life's tough questions. Finally, have you ever thought of saying a prayer? It doesn’t have to be lengthy or well structured; in fact, I am a believer in keeping it simple. Maybe, next time we have to walk through the desert experience one of these small suggestions may provide an oasis and aid our progress as a pilgrim.
