Dilan Markanday's first-half strike was his third goal in four games in all competitions
Dilan Markanday scored one goal and teed up one of substitute Josh Koroma's late double as Chesterfield earned a deserved victory in a dominant display against a below-par Tranmere Rovers.
The Spireites only had Markanday's brilliant individual strike to show after a one-sided first half in which Rovers managed just one touch in the opposition box and one off-target attempt on goal.
Chesterfield created and wasted numerous chances and their profligacy looked like it could cost them when a powerful Dylan Jones header levelled the scores just before the hour.
But with seven minutes remaining the hosts sped away to a fourth League Two victory of the season.
Markanday set up Louie Marsh who rammed home the Chesterfield home goal via a deflection and Koroma's low strike and toe-poked finish sealed the points, before Jacob Slater's late shot doubled Tranmere's tally.
The scoreline just about did justice to a game in which Chesterfield's ongoing inability to take their chances seemed as though it would once again leave boss Paul Cook frustrated.
Marsh went close shortly before the outstanding Markanday cut inside from the right and curled a lovely shot into the far corner for the opener.
Joel Randall then scuffed an effort wide, Markanday had a decent strike saved and Marsh smashed an effort off the bar.
However, Rovers improved dramatically on the resumption and Tom Ince's teasing cross was well met by Jones to make it 1-1 during their best spell of the game.
But having regained their composure, Chesterfield, who have moved into the play-off places, seized control again.
Lee Bonis somehow headed wide from close range before Marsh struck to make it 2-1 and Koroma's classy late double eased any nerves, prior to Slater completing the scoring for a Rovers side who slipped to their second league loss of the season.
Webb: 'Comfortable victory'
Darrell Clarke: ‘Nowhere near good enough’
