Anthony Scully's debut goal ended Exeter City's month-long League Two goal drought as they beat Rotherham United 1-0 at St James Park.

The Grecians - who had not scored in their last four League Two matches - secured just their second win of the season as they handed the Millers a first loss in nearly a month.

Exeter impressed in the opening period and had three good chances to go ahead.

New signing Scully saw a seventh-minute effort from the edge of the box blocked by Dominic Iorfa after goalkeeper Julian Eyestone had thwarted the on-rushing Josh Gordon.

Grecians skipper Jack Fitzwater saw a header saved by Eyestone two minutes later while Taylor Perry should have ended that run after 26 minutes when Scully put him through on goal, but the midfielder's low effort slid agonisingly wide of the far post.

Scully pounced early in the second half after Charlie Cummins had put the impressive George Birch through on the left and the teenager's cross was met by the former Shrewsbury Town forward to the delight of the home fans.

Jili Buyabu and Paul Mullin went close for the Millers soon after, while Josh Gordon headed a good chance over the Rotherham bar with 25 minutes left and Eyestone got down well to save a low Cummins effort moments later.

Rotherham made attacking changes, but it was Exeter that almost got a second when substitute Ethan Sutherland crashed a volley from a deep Gwion Edwards cross against the post with 10 minutes to go.

The win moves Exeter up to 20th in League Two, while Rotherham slip to 17th.
